Sermon: Rational Faith for an Age of
Reason, by Evangelist Jim Craft
Hymns from the Virginia Field Prayer Book:
Hymn Number 12 – Stand Up, Stand Up for
Jesus
Scripture Readings (verses in bold to be read aloud):
1 In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will [God] appoint [for] walls and bulwarks.
2
Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation, which keepeth the truth may enter
in.
3
Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]:
because he trusteth in thee.
4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH [is] everlasting strength:
5
For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low;
he layeth it low, [even] to the ground; he bringeth it [even] to the dust.
6
The foot shall tread it down, [even] the feet of the poor, [and] the steps of
the needy.
7
The way of the just [is] uprightness: thou, most upright, dost weigh the path
of the just.
8
Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire
of [our] soul [is] to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.
9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments [are] in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
10 Let favour be shewed to the wicked, [yet] will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD.
11 LORD, [when] thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: [but] they shall see, and be ashamed for [their] envy at the people; yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them.
12 LORD, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.
13 O LORD our God, [other] lords beside thee have had dominion over us: [but] by thee only will we make mention of thy name.
14 [They are] dead, they shall not live; [they are] deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.
15 Thou hast increased the nation, O LORD, thou hast increased the nation: thou art glorified: thou hadst removed [it] far [unto] all the ends of the earth.
16 LORD, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer [when] thy chastening [was] upon them.
17 Like as a woman with child, [that] draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, [and] crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O LORD.
18 We have been with child,
we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not
wrought any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world
fallen.
19 Thy dead [men] shall live, [together with] my dead
body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew [is
as] the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.
20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.
21 For, behold, the LORD
cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their
iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her
slain.
1
Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with [my] whole heart, in the
assembly of the upright, and [in] the congregation.
2
The works of the LORD [are] great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.
3
His work [is] honourable and glorious: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4
He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD [is] gracious and
full of compassion.
5 He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant.
6
He hath shewed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the
heritage of the heathen.
7
The works of his hands [are] verity and judgment; all his commandments [are]
sure.
8
They stand fast for ever and ever, [and are] done in truth and uprightness.
9
He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever:
holy and reverend [is] his name.
10
The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have
all they that do [his commandments]: his praise endureth for ever.
1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born
of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is
begotten of him.
2
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep
his commandments.
3
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his
commandments are not grievous.
4
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory
that overcometh the world, [even] our faith.
5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
6
This is he that came by water and blood, [even] Jesus Christ; not by water
only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness,
because the Spirit is truth.
19 Then the same day at evening, being the first [day]
of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for
fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace
[be] unto you.
20
And when he had so said, he shewed unto them [his] hands and his side. Then
were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.
21
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace [be] unto you: as [my] Father hath sent
me, even so send I you.
22
And when he had said this, he breathed on [them], and saith unto them, Receive
ye the Holy Ghost:
23
Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; [and] whose soever [sins]
ye retain, they are retained.
24
But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus
came.
25
The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said
unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my
finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will
not believe.
26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: [then] came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace [be] unto you.
27
Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and
reach hither thy hand, and thrust [it] into my side: and be not faithless, but
believing.
28
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
29
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed:
blessed [are] they that have not seen, and [yet] have believed.
30
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which
are not written in this book:
31
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son
of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
